Jon Watts Set to Direct First Film in New ‘Star Wars’ Trilogy
The next era of Star Wars is beginning to take shape, with Jon Watts reportedly set to direct the first installment in a new trilogy being developed by Lucasfilm.
Watts, best known for directing Tom Holland’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home and Spider-Man: No Way Home, will helm the first film from a script by Simon Kinberg.
Kinberg has been developing the new trilogy for Lucasfilm since 2024 and is expected to write all three films.
While Lucasfilm has yet to officially announce a title for the movie, reports indicate Kinberg’s trilogy is being developed as a continuation of the Skywalker Saga following 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. That could potentially position Watts’ movie as the unofficial Episode X, although Lucasfilm has not formally used that title.
Daisy Ridley is also expected to return as Rey in some capacity, though exactly how large of a role the character will have remains unclear. The development also raises questions about the previously announced Rey-centered film that would follow the character as she attempts to rebuild the Jedi Order.

His experience with massive franchises is considerable. Watts directed all three films in Tom Holland’s original Spider-Man trilogy, culminating with 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Kinberg also has a history with the franchise, having co-created Star Wars Rebels alongside Dave Filoni and previously consulting on Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Despite Watts becoming attached to the project, the new trilogy reportedly has not yet received a formal green light from Disney. There is currently no announced release date or official title for the first film.
Before the new trilogy potentially arrives, Lucasfilm will return to theaters with Star Wars: Starfighter, directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Gosling. The film is scheduled to hit theaters in May 2027.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day Has Officially Made Box Office History
Spider-Man: Brand New Day has officially made box office history.
The Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios blockbuster has surpassed Star Wars: The Force Awakens to become the highest-grossing movie of all time at the domestic box office, ending a record that had stood for more than a decade.
The Tom Holland-led film has now earned approximately $936.77 million in North America, narrowly passing the $936.66 million domestic total earned by The Force Awakens. Even more impressive, Brand New Day reached the record after just 47 days in theaters.
The milestone is the latest in an extraordinary theatrical run for the fourth Tom Holland Spider-Man movie.
Brand New Day opened with $360 million domestically, setting a new record for the biggest domestic opening weekend in box office history. The film subsequently became the fastest movie ever to cross every major domestic milestone from $400 million through $900 million.
Its record-breaking performance has also extended far beyond North America. Spider-Man: Brand New Day has earned approximately $2.45 billion worldwide, placing it among the highest-grossing movies ever released globally.

Lucasfilm Congratulates Spider-Man
Following the record being broken, Lucasfilm and the official Star Wars social media account acknowledged Brand New Day taking the crown from The Force Awakens.
“Impressive. Most Impressive.”
Lucasfilm then congratulated director Destin Daniel Cretton, Tom Holland, Sony Pictures, Marvel Studios and the entire Brand New Day team on setting the new domestic box office record.
The studio also shared artwork featuring Spider-Man alongside X-Wings with the message:
“The Force is strong with you! Congratulations from Lucasfilm.”
The gesture continues a long-running Hollywood tradition in which filmmakers and studios publicly congratulate one another when a major box office record changes hands.

A Record More Than a Decade in the Making
Star Wars: The Force Awakens had occupied the top spot since its historic theatrical run following its December 2015 release.
Other enormous blockbusters came close during the years that followed. Avengers: Endgame, for example, finished with more than $858 million domestically but was unable to catch The Force Awakens.
Now Spider-Man has finally done it.
And Brand New Day isn’t finished yet. The movie remains in theaters, meaning its new all-time domestic record will continue to grow.

Original ‘Star Wars’ Heading to IMAX 70mm for the First Time
Star Wars is heading back to theaters for its 50th anniversary, and this time fans will be able to experience the film in a way they never have before.
Lucasfilm and Disney have announced that the original 1977 Star Wars, later retitled Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, will be released in IMAX for the first time when it returns to theaters on February 19, 2027. Select theaters will also screen the film in IMAX 70mm.
The theatrical return is part of Lucasfilm’s yearlong celebration marking 50 years since George Lucas introduced audiences to Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, Darth Vader and a galaxy far, far away.
While the original film was shown in traditional 70mm during its initial theatrical run, it has never received an IMAX release. That makes the upcoming anniversary engagement the first opportunity to see the 1977 classic presented in the format.

The celebration won’t stop there.
Lucasfilm also confirmed that Star Wars: Starfighter, the upcoming film directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Gosling, will receive an IMAX 70mm release when it arrives in theaters on May 28, 2027.
That date comes almost exactly 50 years after the original Star Wars opened in theaters in May 1977.
Star Wars: Starfighter stars Gosling alongside Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Amy Adams, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings and Flynn Gray. Jonathan Tropper wrote the screenplay, with Levy and Kathleen Kennedy producing.
The original Star Wars returns to theaters February 19, 2027, with IMAX 70mm screenings available at select locations.

Ewan McGregor Has an Idea for Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2 That Would Bring Yoda Back
Ewan McGregor still isn’t ready to leave Obi-Wan Kenobi behind, and the Star Wars actor has already pitched an idea that could reunite the legendary Jedi Master with Yoda.
McGregor recently revealed that he has spoken with Lucasfilm co-president Dave Filoni about potential stories that could bring Obi-Wan back following the events of the Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi. One idea would explore Obi-Wan attempting to reconnect with Yoda during the years between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope.
“It was very casual, but I said there’s got to be something,” McGregor said of his conversation with Filoni. “Because Yoda’s somewhere else.”
Following the events of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, Yoda went into exile on Dagobah while Obi-Wan eventually settled on Tatooine to watch over a young Luke Skywalker. McGregor believes the separation between the surviving Jedi could provide the foundation for another Obi-Wan story.
“So I think there could be a story there where I’m trying to reach out to him,” McGregor added.

The idea could also serve as a natural continuation of Obi-Wan Kenobi. The 2022 series ended with Obi-Wan finally reconnecting with the Force ghost of his former master, Qui-Gon Jinn, played once again by Liam Neeson. A second season could potentially explore Obi-Wan’s continued spiritual growth while filling in more of the years leading to the character’s appearance in A New Hope.
McGregor has repeatedly expressed interest in returning to the role, noting that there remains a significant unexplored period between the Disney+ series and the older Obi-Wan portrayed by Alec Guinness. Earlier this month, however, McGregor acknowledged that there still hasn’t been meaningful movement on another season.
For now, Lucasfilm has not officially announced Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2, meaning McGregor’s Yoda storyline remains only an idea. Still, with the actor continuing to push for another chapter and now discussing potential stories directly with Filoni, the door to another Obi-Wan adventure doesn’t appear completely closed.
