New Live-Action Ghostbusters Movie Reportedly in Development at Sony

Published

on

By

The Ghostbusters could be preparing to fire up their proton packs once again, with a new report claiming Sony Pictures is developing another live-action movie in the long-running franchise.

According to industry insider Daniel Richtman, the project is currently going by the title Ghostbusters: Nightmare on 34th Street. The film is also reportedly being written by Josh Miller, whose credits include the Sonic the Hedgehog movies and the Christmas action-comedy Violent Night.

Sony has not officially announced the project, meaning details surrounding the movie should still be considered unconfirmed. There is currently no director, cast or release date attached to the reported film.

Perhaps the most interesting detail is the title itself. Nightmare on 34th Street appears to be a play on the Christmas classic Miracle on 34th Street, immediately raising the possibility that the Ghostbusters could be headed into a holiday-themed supernatural adventure.

However, no plot details have been revealed, and there is currently no confirmation that the movie will actually take place during Christmas.

It is also unclear whether the project would continue the storyline established in Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire or introduce a different group of characters.

The most recent live-action installment, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, arrived in 2024 and brought the franchise back to New York City. The movie continued the story of the Spengler family while once again bringing together several members of the original Ghostbusters team.

The franchise is also expanding outside of live action. Netflix has Ghostbusters: Night Shift, an animated series set in New York City in 1994, on the way in 2027, while a separate animated Ghostbusters feature is also in development.

For now, Ghostbusters: Nightmare on 34th Street remains an unconfirmed project, but if the report proves accurate, another live-action chapter of the Ghostbusters franchise could officially be on the way.

Following the massive success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, director Destin Daniel Cretton is expanding his relationship with Sony Pictures.

Cretton has signed a three-year overall deal with the studio that will see him develop and produce new films through his production company, Hisako Films. Company president Jeyun Munford will work alongside Cretton on projects developed under the new agreement.

The partnership comes after Cretton directed Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which has become a historic box office success for Sony. The film has earned more than $2.45 billion worldwide and recently surpassed Star Wars: The Force Awakens to become the highest-grossing movie ever at the domestic box office.

Cretton expressed his excitement about continuing his relationship with the studio following his experience making the latest Spider-Man film.

“I had the best time making Brand New Day with Tom Rothman, Sanford Panitch and their team,” Cretton said, adding that he is excited to continue developing theatrical stories for audiences around the world.

Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group President Sanford Panitch also praised Cretton as a filmmaker and storyteller while confirming that the studio is expanding its relationship with Cretton, Munford and Hisako Films.

Naturally, the deal raises questions about Cretton’s future with Spider-Man.

According to reports, Sony is eager to bring Cretton back to direct the next Spider-Man movie. However, the new agreement specifically covers developing and producing films and does not currently include a directing commitment for Spider-Man 5.

That distinction also allows Cretton to continue directing projects for other studios.

His next major directing project is expected to be Lionsgate’s live-action adaptation of Naruto, which is currently being developed with production expected to begin in 2027.

Whether Cretton ultimately returns to Peter Parker’s world remains to be seen, but following the record-breaking performance of Brand New Day, Sony clearly intends to remain in business with the filmmaker for years to come.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day Has Officially Made Box Office History

Published

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has officially made box office history.

The Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios blockbuster has surpassed Star Wars: The Force Awakens to become the highest-grossing movie of all time at the domestic box office, ending a record that had stood for more than a decade.

The Tom Holland-led film has now earned approximately $936.77 million in North America, narrowly passing the $936.66 million domestic total earned by The Force Awakens. Even more impressive, Brand New Day reached the record after just 47 days in theaters.

The milestone is the latest in an extraordinary theatrical run for the fourth Tom Holland Spider-Man movie.

Brand New Day opened with $360 million domestically, setting a new record for the biggest domestic opening weekend in box office history. The film subsequently became the fastest movie ever to cross every major domestic milestone from $400 million through $900 million.

Its record-breaking performance has also extended far beyond North America. Spider-Man: Brand New Day has earned approximately $2.45 billion worldwide, placing it among the highest-grossing movies ever released globally.

Lucasfilm Congratulates Spider-Man

Following the record being broken, Lucasfilm and the official Star Wars social media account acknowledged Brand New Day taking the crown from The Force Awakens.

“Impressive. Most Impressive.”

Lucasfilm then congratulated director Destin Daniel Cretton, Tom Holland, Sony Pictures, Marvel Studios and the entire Brand New Day team on setting the new domestic box office record.

The studio also shared artwork featuring Spider-Man alongside X-Wings with the message:

“The Force is strong with you! Congratulations from Lucasfilm.”

The gesture continues a long-running Hollywood tradition in which filmmakers and studios publicly congratulate one another when a major box office record changes hands.

A Record More Than a Decade in the Making

Star Wars: The Force Awakens had occupied the top spot since its historic theatrical run following its December 2015 release.

Other enormous blockbusters came close during the years that followed. Avengers: Endgame, for example, finished with more than $858 million domestically but was unable to catch The Force Awakens.

Now Spider-Man has finally done it.

And Brand New Day isn’t finished yet. The movie remains in theaters, meaning its new all-time domestic record will continue to grow.
