Kingpin: Character Profile

Wilson Fisk / Kingpin (Marvel)

He might not have super powers, but his strength and strategic thinking has propelled him to reign over Hells’ Kitchen. He has faced heroes, antiheroes and villains and will do whatever it takes to protect his criminal empire.

Here follows a brief narrative of Wilson Fisk / Kingpin before watching Echo, the new series coming out next week on Disney Plus and Hulu.

Origins of Wilson Fisk / Kingpin

Wilson Fisk was born in Hell’s Kitchen. Fisk’s mother was caring, but his father was an abusive, unloving person involved with mobsters. The father borrowed money to get involved with politics, and when that endeavor didn’t work out, young Fisk was at the receiving end of verbal abuse. His mother, Marlene however was physically abused by the father, and one day Fisk couldn’t take it and murdered his father with a hammer. To protect Fisk, the mother helped to dump the body and sent Fisk away to stay with relatives far away from Hell’s Kitchen.

The Might of Kingpin of Crime

Wilson Fisk is built quite big, and the bulk is muscle, not fat. He is skilled in various types of hand-to hand combat techniques and uses his size to both attack and defend. He can fight super powered heroes without the fear of being severely injured or killed.

As a strategic thinker, he has controlled various henchman and super villains such as Bullseye, Elektra, Tinkerer, The Spot, Sandman, to list a few. His charitable donations and appointed legal team has helped to build a pristine reputation, keeping his crime operations under wraps.

Friends and Foes

A brutal businessman such as Fisk does actually have a soft spot, for none other than Vanessa, an amnesiac woman who were brought before him by his staff members. They married and Richard Fisk was born.

He was the guardian of Maya Lopez / Echo after her father was murdered. Fisk was involved with the crime and hid the truth from Lopez.

Fisk is no stranger to making enemies. Some of his early rivals is Silvio Manfredi who was the original Kingpin and Ben Urich who is a seasoned journalist hunting for evidence to bring the mighty Kingpin down. Even the Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man has found himself squaring off against the might of Fisk, which results in Electro joining Fisk to capture Spider-Man. The number one enemy of Fisk will always be Matt Murdock / Daredevil. Murdock uses the law, while Daredevil uses his fighting skills on the streets of Hell’s Kitchen against the Kingpin of Crime.

Kingpin’s Legacy

Daredevil would prove to be Kingpin’s greatest rival. Once Fisk learns his secret identity, he sets out to ruin his life by targeting his friends. Murdock was also left for dead after a serious beating by Fisk and to make matters worse, Fisk outed his identity to the public. Murdock had to call in special help.

Kingpin and Daredevil joined forces to face off against the ninja gang, The Hand. Even Red Skull and Hydra became targets on Kingpin’s list, and Fisk joined up with Captain America and S.H.I.E.L.D to bring Hydra to justice. Fisk joined forces with an Inhuman, Janus Jardeesh, who helped keep his criminal operations under wraps.

Fisk was elected as mayor of New York City, with Murdock as the Deputy Mayor. Murdock thought his would be the ideal position to keep an eye on Fisk, but as a plot twist, Fisk outlawed all vigilante-related activities and put out a warrant for the arrest of Daredevil.

A write-up of Matt Murdock / Daredevil will follow in the next Marvel character profile.

The above stories about Wilson Fisk / Kingpin have been shortened and enough detail has been left out to leave you hungry for more. I highly encourage subscribing to Marvel Unlimited to read up about Wilson Fisk / Kingpin or any of your favorite Marvel characters.

X-Men ’97 Review | Nostalgic, Epic & Marvelous!

X-Men '97 (Disney)

Get ready for action-packed adventure, many surprise cameos and a storyline that takes

A band of mutants use their uncanny gifts to protect a world that hates and fears them; they’re challenged like never before, forced to face a dangerous and unexpected new future.

X-Men ’97 (Disney)

X-Men ’97 is a revival of the classic 1990s animated television series. The storyline picks up directly after the events of the original series, maintaining continuity and preserving the beloved elements that made the original a hit show back in the day. Many of the original voice cast members have returned, including Cal Dodd as Wolverine, Lenore Zann as Rogue, George Buza as Beast, Alison Sealy-Smith as Storm and Adrian Hough as Kurt Wagner/Nightcrawler, which adds a layer of originality and contributes to the overall nostalgia of the television show. Here I’m feeling like a little kid again, watching the show on a Saturday morning. I was 7 years old when it was on television in the early mornings, and it still brings back fond memories.

There were a number of new stars who joined the show such as Ray Chase who replaced Norm Spencer as Cyclops, Jennifer Hale who replaced Catherine Disher as Jean Grey, Holly Chou who replaced Alyson Court as Jubilee, A.J. LoCascio as Gambit, Matthew Waterson as Magneto, J.P. Karliak as Morph, Isaac Robinson-Smith as Bishop, Ross Marquand as Professor Charles Xavier and Gui Agustini as Roberto da Costa/Sunspot.

X-Men ’97 (Disney)

The series starts off in a world where the X-Men grapple with the loss of Professor Charles Xavier. Amidst all the chaos and uncertainty, Magneto rises to the occasion and becomes the new leader of the X-Men. This provides additional drama and the team dynamics is frequently tested with the new leadership. While dealing with the new leadership dynamics the X-Men finds themselves still dealing with people who would stop at nothing to end all mutants. The storyline doesn’t hold back on the action sequences and themes such as grief, loss and acceptance are touched on throughout the series.

The trailer of the show doesn’t spoil anything for the viewer, and I highly encourage you to watch every intro and try to spot any new changes. The show provides many cameos and easter eggs, keeping my hopes alive of a potential crossover.

The story ends with a twist, leaving you hungry for the next season, and as any Marvel movie or television show would have it, a mid-credits scene to whet your appetite for what’s to come. If you are new to X-Men you can still jump in and watch the television series, but I highly recommend watching the original series to get you up to date with most of the lore and history of the X-Men.

X-Men ’97 keeps the legacy of our favorite mutants alive with a well-written story that is filled with emotion, surprises and promises of more adventures.

Thank you Beau DeMayo for an eXcellent story! I rate this show a 5 out of 5!

Will we skip the intro song? No! I don’t think we will. Make sure to catch the show on Disney Plus!

Madame Web Review

Celeste O'Connor, Dakota Johnson, Isabela Merced & Sydney Sweeney (Sony)

Be ready to get caught in the web of Cassandra, our very own Madame Web. Swing by your local cinemas now to catch Madame Web on the big screen!

Cassandra Webb is a New York City paramedic who starts to show signs of clairvoyance. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she must protect three young women from a mysterious adversary who wants them dead.

Isabela Merced, Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor (Sony)

Movie Review (no spoiler)

Madame Web, the fourth entry in the Sony’s Spider-Man Universe brings us a different take on a complete new group of heroes in the heart of New York. I need to caution the readers that when going to watch the movie, keep an open mind. This movie is about Madame Web and her role as a protector to three young women who will play a much greater role in future…hopefully. If you are expecting Peter Parker / Spider-Man to swing in and catch a crook, you will sadly be disappointed.

I firmly welcome the new take on the Spider-Women within Marvel. Since Across the Spider-Verse I have pondered the question on whether we will get a chance to see any of the Spider-Women on the big screen and also the ‘How?’. I have always seen Cassandra Webb / Madame Web play a motherlike and protector role. I personally think Dakota Johnson played her part excellently well in that sense.

Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced and Celeste O’Connor plays the parts of Julia Cornwall, Anya Corazon and Mattie Franklin and delivers a breath of fresh air. They are teased to play big roles in the future, according to the villain in the movie. The new villain of the movie, played by Tahar Rahim, provides a thrilling experience at first but gets taken down too easily at the end.

Tahar Rahim as Ezekiel Sims (Sony)

Madame Web provided a good introduction to a new character, which is Madame Web, but sadly doesn’t provide any promise of continuity and linkages with any of the existing movies within the current universe. A few easter eggs in the movie point to another beloved Marvel character, but I would have loved to experience more of Cassie’s web and the chance of a teaser for the other heroines of the movie since there are still so much stories left to tell. There is unfortunately no post-credits scene, which was a let down, considering Madame Web is part of the Sony Spider-Man Universe and continuity is what many are hopeful for. I’m curious if we get to see continuity later in the form of a sequel or even a cameo of Cassie, Julia, Mattie and / or Anya in any other production.

I rate this movie 3 out of 5.

The trailer doesn’t spoil too much of the storyline. Make sure to catch at a big screen near you.
