Echo: Character Profile

Maya Lopez / Echo (Marvel)

Originally a pawn for the Kingpin of Crime, the deaf Cheyenne-Latin American Maya Lopez becomes a crusader, using her photographic reflexes to combat criminals in Hells’ Kitchen, teams up with the Avengers, and even became a host for the Phoenix Force. Here follows a brief narrative of Maya Lopez / Echo before watching Echo, the new series coming out next week on Disney Plus and Hulu.

Origin of Maya Lopez

Maya Lopez grows up with her father William Lincoln after her mother deserted their family. Originally thought to be learning-disabled, her teachers realize that Maya is in fact deaf. Her father works for crime kingpin, Wilson Fisk, who murders him. Wilson becomes Maya’s guardian and hopes to make use of her in his criminal empire.

Maya’s Ability

Maya can duplicate any actions that she can observe, ranging from musical performances to combat such as martial arts and weapons. She can copy a range of fighting styles and is skilled with various musical instruments as well. She has wielded pistols, dart guns, a billy club, and throwing stars in combat.

Friends and Foes

Kingpin, Wilson Fisk lies to Maya about her father’s death, blaming the Devil of Hells Kitchen, Matt Murdock. Maya learns the truth eventually and turns on Fisk. She has even fought alongside Wolverine on a few occasions. Maya joins the Avengers and helps to investigate the Hand. She has been romantically involved with both Clint Barton / Hawkeye as well as Marc Spector / Moon Knight.

Maya Lopez / Echo’s Backstory

Wilson Fisk sent Maya to keep an eye on Matt Murdock. As luck would have it they were attracted to each other, resulting in Fisk falsely accusing Murdock of murdering her father. Recorded video footage helped Maya beat Murdock in a fight. She couldn’t bring herself to kill Murdock that day, but fought him again when Fisk was reported dead with Daredevil presumably responsible. She came to the conclusion that Murdock was innocent, confronted Fisk, and wounded him severely. She went on to travel to work through this ordeal.

Upon her return, she had brief encounters with the likes of Fisk and Murdock and realised that she still had a troubled spirit. After encountering Wolverine she made peace with her troubled past and tried her hand in performance art again.

Maya took on a new identity as Ronin and helped the Avengers face the Hand in Japan. She lost her life and got resurrected by none other than Elektra and the Hand, with the intention of having her work for the notorious Hand. She got rescued by Luke Cage and Danny Rand and Dr . Stephen Strange provided the necessary medical assistance. They soon discovered that they would be facing off against shapeshifting Skrulls. Maya then joined Cage’s Avengers as Echo, thus giving up the Ronin identity.

Maya teamed up with Marc Spector to face-off against the new Kingpin of Los Angeles, Count Nefaria, which also resulted in her death. Maya appeared again later only to join hands with Murdock to face Ulysses Klaw whose aim was to take over New York City. Loki Laufeyson once went as far to trick Maya to provide assistance on another planet.

The Phoenix Force chose Maya as its host and with this power she participated in the Contest of Champions, facing off against Namor. She lost the battle, but the Phoenix Force resurrected her. Maya Lopez was reborn as the Phoenix!

The above stories about Maya Lopez / Echo have been shortened and enough detail has been left out to leave you hungry for more. I highly encourage subscribing to Marvel Unlimited to read up about Maya Lopez / Echo or any of your favorite Marvel characters.

X-Men ’97 Review | Nostalgic, Epic & Marvelous!

X-Men '97 (Disney)

Get ready for action-packed adventure, many surprise cameos and a storyline that takes

A band of mutants use their uncanny gifts to protect a world that hates and fears them; they’re challenged like never before, forced to face a dangerous and unexpected new future.

X-Men ’97 (Disney)

X-Men ’97 is a revival of the classic 1990s animated television series. The storyline picks up directly after the events of the original series, maintaining continuity and preserving the beloved elements that made the original a hit show back in the day. Many of the original voice cast members have returned, including Cal Dodd as Wolverine, Lenore Zann as Rogue, George Buza as Beast, Alison Sealy-Smith as Storm and Adrian Hough as Kurt Wagner/Nightcrawler, which adds a layer of originality and contributes to the overall nostalgia of the television show. Here I’m feeling like a little kid again, watching the show on a Saturday morning. I was 7 years old when it was on television in the early mornings, and it still brings back fond memories.

There were a number of new stars who joined the show such as Ray Chase who replaced Norm Spencer as Cyclops, Jennifer Hale who replaced Catherine Disher as Jean Grey, Holly Chou who replaced Alyson Court as Jubilee, A.J. LoCascio as Gambit, Matthew Waterson as Magneto, J.P. Karliak as Morph, Isaac Robinson-Smith as Bishop, Ross Marquand as Professor Charles Xavier and Gui Agustini as Roberto da Costa/Sunspot.

X-Men ’97 (Disney)

The series starts off in a world where the X-Men grapple with the loss of Professor Charles Xavier. Amidst all the chaos and uncertainty, Magneto rises to the occasion and becomes the new leader of the X-Men. This provides additional drama and the team dynamics is frequently tested with the new leadership. While dealing with the new leadership dynamics the X-Men finds themselves still dealing with people who would stop at nothing to end all mutants. The storyline doesn’t hold back on the action sequences and themes such as grief, loss and acceptance are touched on throughout the series.

The trailer of the show doesn’t spoil anything for the viewer, and I highly encourage you to watch every intro and try to spot any new changes. The show provides many cameos and easter eggs, keeping my hopes alive of a potential crossover.

The story ends with a twist, leaving you hungry for the next season, and as any Marvel movie or television show would have it, a mid-credits scene to whet your appetite for what’s to come. If you are new to X-Men you can still jump in and watch the television series, but I highly recommend watching the original series to get you up to date with most of the lore and history of the X-Men.

X-Men ’97 keeps the legacy of our favorite mutants alive with a well-written story that is filled with emotion, surprises and promises of more adventures.

Thank you Beau DeMayo for an eXcellent story! I rate this show a 5 out of 5!

Will we skip the intro song? No! I don’t think we will. Make sure to catch the show on Disney Plus!

Madame Web Review

Celeste O'Connor, Dakota Johnson, Isabela Merced & Sydney Sweeney (Sony)

Be ready to get caught in the web of Cassandra, our very own Madame Web. Swing by your local cinemas now to catch Madame Web on the big screen!

Cassandra Webb is a New York City paramedic who starts to show signs of clairvoyance. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she must protect three young women from a mysterious adversary who wants them dead.

Isabela Merced, Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor (Sony)

Movie Review (no spoiler)

Madame Web, the fourth entry in the Sony’s Spider-Man Universe brings us a different take on a complete new group of heroes in the heart of New York. I need to caution the readers that when going to watch the movie, keep an open mind. This movie is about Madame Web and her role as a protector to three young women who will play a much greater role in future…hopefully. If you are expecting Peter Parker / Spider-Man to swing in and catch a crook, you will sadly be disappointed.

I firmly welcome the new take on the Spider-Women within Marvel. Since Across the Spider-Verse I have pondered the question on whether we will get a chance to see any of the Spider-Women on the big screen and also the ‘How?’. I have always seen Cassandra Webb / Madame Web play a motherlike and protector role. I personally think Dakota Johnson played her part excellently well in that sense.

Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced and Celeste O’Connor plays the parts of Julia Cornwall, Anya Corazon and Mattie Franklin and delivers a breath of fresh air. They are teased to play big roles in the future, according to the villain in the movie. The new villain of the movie, played by Tahar Rahim, provides a thrilling experience at first but gets taken down too easily at the end.

Tahar Rahim as Ezekiel Sims (Sony)

Madame Web provided a good introduction to a new character, which is Madame Web, but sadly doesn’t provide any promise of continuity and linkages with any of the existing movies within the current universe. A few easter eggs in the movie point to another beloved Marvel character, but I would have loved to experience more of Cassie’s web and the chance of a teaser for the other heroines of the movie since there are still so much stories left to tell. There is unfortunately no post-credits scene, which was a let down, considering Madame Web is part of the Sony Spider-Man Universe and continuity is what many are hopeful for. I’m curious if we get to see continuity later in the form of a sequel or even a cameo of Cassie, Julia, Mattie and / or Anya in any other production.

I rate this movie 3 out of 5.

The trailer doesn’t spoil too much of the storyline. Make sure to catch at a big screen near you.
