The newest title from acclaimed developer FromSoftware has debuted 20 minutes of gameplay for fans!
Gaming as of right now has left me empty. Growing up, I was always looking forward to the biggest titles that will be coming out but now I have lost that energy and have mainly prioritized playing games I missed out on for when I was too young to play them or games I have missed throughout the last decade. The few titles that stood out to me from 2020 were The Last of Us Part II, Hades, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and Demon Souls. However, if there is one studio I will consistently buy a new release on day one, it is FromSoftware. In the last decade, this Japanese studio has been on a hot streak with games such as Dark Souls III, Bloodborne, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice proving to fans that they want to experiment with new worlds and gameplay mechanics while also having that difficult gameplay curve fans of theirs have been accustomed to. My only advice to newcomers is to give their PS4 exclusive, Bloodborne a try and do not give up, however, I digress. Their newest title, Elden Ring, combines both elements of Dark Souls while also being written by Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin. Since its announcement trailer in 2019, followed by its second trailer this year, I was gaining more and more excitement from the title while also having some worries/doubts.
Today, the studio has officially revealed its gameplay mechanics and world-building with over 20 minutes worth of new information for fans to sink their teeth into as well as announcements of collectors editions of the game. Judging from the trailer, the game looks like a compilement of everything the studio has built up to: from the world reminiscent of the Dark Souls trilogy to the boss design of Bloodborne and the gameplay ideas taken from Sekiro. Elden Ring not only looks sensational but feels like the first time an open-world game will live up to its potential, making 2017’s Breath of the Wild have some competition. Elden Ring prioritizes freedom and the vast open land of the Lands Between with its very large map alongside its main quest and side missions but also adding in dungeons for players to explore through filled with bosses and treasures to be found within. Elden Ring also displays how summoning will work alongside how PVP and cooperative multiplayer will be used, it cannot be a FromSoftware title without invasions of players ruining your playthrough. Sure, we have only been given 20 minutes worth of gameplay footage but I have a safe chance that Elden Ring will be a homerun from FromSoftware. Personally, I believe it will be the most accessible title from the studio for newcomers of their games while also having that difficulty curve. This is undoubtedly my most anticipated game release of 2022, and I believe that the recent delay from January to late February is perfectly understandable. My fuel for gaming has been rekindled and February 25th, 2022 cannot come soon enough.
