Defenders of The Deep | Exploring Namor and The Atlanteans as they make a splash in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

The panel for Marvel Studios kicked off with a bang last night during its Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con. And they certainly brought their Avengers A-Game as it was packed full of announcements regarding their upcoming projects with new release dates, trailers, and exclusive sneak peeks for those attending. Here at Coastal House Media were up all night with anticipation so continue reading on as we delve into the Studio/Comic giant’s future plans.

Marvel Studios ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ capped the Hall H presentation with thunderous roars and applause. The first film quickly became one of Marvel’s most successful films to date and truly became an impact on culture and society. With Wakanda Forever’s release on November 11th, 2022 we are introduced to new important characters that ultimately set the stage for one of the most emotional chapters in MCU history. With many of the original cast reprising their roles we witness a vulnerable nation grieving as in the wake of king T’Challa’s death the Wakandans fight to protect their nation from intervening powers as we are introduced to Atlantis, the undersea nation and its king Namor the Sub-Mariner.

Namor is an important character to be heading into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he was first introduced into Marvel comics since 1939 and has consistently made a splash across the pages often being labelled as the first mutant. Over the decades in the comics, his full name was revealed to be Namor McKenzie, he’s the son of a human father named Leonard McKenzie and Atlantean Princess Fen. Capable of living on both land and sea, Namor’s heritage led him to acquire physical strength and durability, he can also speak to and control the ocean, and heal himself when he’s in water. Throughout his run, in the comics, Namor has teamed up and made allegiances with the Fantastic Four and even had a fling for Sue Storm. At one point he even joined the Avengers and helped found the superhero team called the Defenders. In the Aftermath of the Kree/Skrull war, Namor also became a co-founder of the Illuminati, a group dedicated to protecting the world from major threats by any means necessary.

In recent comics, during Avengers Vs. X-Men Namor uses his powers and attacks Wakanda, absolutely devastating the African nation, this ignited a massive conflict between Wakanda and Atlantis. Both are technologically advanced countries and are defined by their secretiveness and fierce independence. Those similarities have led to serval clashes, and the tension between the two nations has much been explored through their leaders.

With Namor’s inclusion in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever it will be fascinating to see what aspects they take from the comic counterpart and where it leads in the future. Namor will be played by Tenoch Huerta as the trailer offers us some unique and fascinating glimpses of the character. Through flashback sequences, we see what appears to be Namor being born underwater with his comic-accurate ankle wings which we then see later on as he grows older. The MCU’s take on Atlantis is a fantastic choice one that echos Mayan civilisation and Aztec culture and iconography. We see Namor in a ceremonial headdress and the world-building looks phenomenal as it’s rooted in history. I’m loving his Aztec-inspired variation of his comic-accurate green trunks.

Huerta expressed his happiness at being able to take part in the MCU and called the experience “an honor.” He talks about inclusion, commenting that he’s from “the hood” but thanks to the inclusion of the MCU, he’s now “here.” He views the moment as an inspiration for all of the kids who grew up looking and living like himself, saying “a lot of kids are there in their hood, dreaming of being here, and they can make it!” Henoch also expressed his gratitude by delivering a message to his community and thanking everyone in Spanish.

Another aspect similar to the comics is that the Atlanteans have blue-coloured skin. Also making their live-action debuts are Namorita and Attuma. Namorita played by Mabel Cadena is the daughter of an Atlantean man and surface woman in the comics. In the comics, she has the ability to swim at superhuman speed and is immune to the cold and pressures of the depth. I’m loving the MCU depiction with her headdress and tribal wear as seen below. Attuma played by Alex Livinalli is the leader of a group of barbarian Atlanteans. He is superhumanly strong and is capable of lifting 60 tons even underwater. Attuma is a beast with his tribal wear and weapon axe.

Namor and the Atlanteans are so important and integral to other storylines that seeing them in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is only the beginning. After all the impending battle between the two nations is upon us. The full trailer featuring footage of Namor and the Atlanteans can be seen below. The cinematography and Coogler’s work here is among the most impressive there’s beaches and phenomenal underwater sequences that are truly otherworldly.

SDCC 2022: Marvel Studios Multiverse Saga News Coming Out of Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con

It’s impossible to sum it all up in one document so definitely stay tuned for more Marvel SDCC coverage and breakdowns throughout the week. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige truly put on the greatest show as he leads those in the room through a walkthrough of what’s coming next for the MCU- Phase Five and beyond. He delighted the audience with surprises around every corner of the ever-expanding Universe.

Marvel Studios welcomes you to the Multiverse Saga.

The news started to trickle in last night hours before the panel even started as Andy Park, Director of Visual Development At Marvel Studios released an official first-look SDCC illustrated poster for Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania. Showcasing Kang, played by Jonathan Majors looming large in the background behind the Ant family consisting of Scott Lang aka Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) , Hope Van Dyne aka The Wasp (Evangeline Lilly) and Cassie Lang who’s known in the comics as Stinger (Kathryn Newton).

The Panel began with an emotional sizzle reel with narration from the late, great Stan Lee. As Kevin Feige takes to the Hall H stage by recapping Phase Four which now to our shock and surprise of knowledge is swiftly finished and comes to an end this year with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Phase Four to me focuses on Grief and loss, it’s about resetting everything in the MCU and introducing new people. Then came the Phase Five announcements which will officially begin with Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania on February 17th, 2023. Super Hero partners Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) and Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) return to continue their adventures as Ant-Man and The Wasp. Together, with Hope’s parents Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) and Janet Van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer), the family finds themselves exploring the Quantum Realm, interacting with strange new creatures, and embarking on an adventure that will push them beyond the limits of what they thought was possible. The footage was screened for the audience only and from what I’ve heard it’s totally bonkers. Kang The Conqueror (Jonathan Majors) features and so do Billy Murray and MODOK.

The Cast were tight-lipped about offering any more information about the next outing with the Ant-Fam but Rudd did mention that “Scott is pretty pleased with himself in his role with saving the universe” — he even wrote a book about it titled LOOK OUT FOR THE LITTLE GUY! (Everyone else, though, loves to tease him about it.)

Family’s a big theme for the movie, as the whole cast teased, but when asked about the Scott-Cassie dynamic, considering he was gone for so much of her life, both stars are mum. “Cassie is becoming who she’s supposed to be,” Newton offered up. “And I don’t want to say anything else!”

During Springtime in 2023, the Secret Invasion series will also land on Disney+. Its based on the highly successful comic book run which details the story of Skrulls infiltrating Earth leaving Nick Fury and others questioning allegiances to who is a human and who is a Skrull. Cobie Smulders, who reprises her role of Maria Hill — a decorated spy and Nick Fury’s loyal #2— was on hand to talk about the new show. “This is a darker show,” Smulders told the crowd. “We’re going to get deeper into the characters. We’re going to see them in new ways, and it’s going to be an exciting thriller, and you’re never going to know who people are. Are they a Skrull? Are they human? It’s going to be a bit of a guessing game.”

The footage was screened for those in attendance which highlighted this darker tone for the MCU, with the opening of the clip showing a conversation between Hill and Fury — he’s been off-world for years ignoring her calls, but he’s finally come back because he knows the threat is too great. But just how bad is it? In another scene, Fury is seen asking James “Rhodey” Rhodes — aka War Machine — just how well he knows his assigned protection as things between the two men get tense. Secret Invasion stars Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Ben Mendelsohn as the Skrull Talos—characters who first met in Captain Marvel. They are joined by Kingsley Ben-Adir, Emilia Clarke, and Olivia Colman. The crossover event series showcases a faction of shapeshifting Skrulls who have been infiltrating Earth for years. This is a series and story I’ve been waiting for Marvel to adapt.

Following Quantumania in Spring 2023 is Guardians of The Galaxy: Volume 3 which will release in Theatres on May 5th, 2023. There were a lot of Guardians on hand to dish about the highly anticipated third instalment of “Guardians of the Galaxy.”

With director James Gunn taking the lead, cast members Chris Pratt, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Sean Gunn, Will Poulter, and Maria Bakalova (who is playing Cosmo the dog) took part in an engaging discussion. Chukwudi Iwuji arrived on stage in costume, revealing to excited fans that he’ll be portraying High Evolutionary in the film.

As for the footage shown in Hall H, it made everyone — on the stage and in the audience — emotional, as Gunn noted that this is the end of this arc for the Guardians crew. before they can get to the end, this ragtag group has to go back to the beginning. Specifically, Rocket’s beginning. The film will explore his early days, and if you thought Baby Groot was cute, just WAIT until you see Baby Rocket.

Another sad thing in the movie? Addressing the crowd, Pratt noted that for Star-Lord is still reeling from the events of Avengers: Endgame considering that the love of his life, Gamora, doesn’t know who he is anymore.  Yeah, cue the tears.

In Marvel Studios Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 our beloved band of misfits are looking a bit different these days. Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him to defend the universe along with protecting one of their own. A mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them.

Summer 2023 will kick off with the debut of Echo, The Hawkeye Spin-Off Streaming exclusively on Disney+ will tell the origin story of Echo revisits Maya Lopez, whose ruthless behaviour in New York City catches up with her in her hometown. She must face her past, reconnect with her Native American roots and embrace the meaning of family and community if she ever hopes to move forward. Also streaming that Summer on Disney+ will be the second season of Loki. And ending the Summer season will be the release of The Marvel’s on July 28, 2023.

During the presentation, Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios, announced that Marvel Studios’ ‘Blade’ starring Mahershala Ali, which begins shooting this October, opens in theaters on November 3, 2023. Feige also announced that the Disney+ series IronHeart will be debuting in the autumn too though we get to Meet Riri Williams — first in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.  Winter 2023 will see the release of another anticipated series Agatha: Coven of Chaos which was formerly titled Agatha: House of Harkness.

Huge announcements came for Phase Five and for the beginning of 2024. Spring that year will see the man without fear return with both Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio reprising their roles as Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk, respectively. The 18 episode series titled Daredevil: Born Again debuts on Disney+. Then on May 3rd, 2024 Captain America: New World Order releases as Sam Wilson is the new man with a plan as he returns to headline his own movie after his Disney+ series.

Phase 5 then draws to a close with Thunderbolts releasing on July 26,2024. Showcasing an exciting new group of heroes.

To the amazement and surprise of the crowd at Hall H, Feige started to announce the start of Phase 6 which finally begins with Marvel’s first family The Fantastic Four which releases November 8th, 2024. Whilst their are plenty more slots left on Phase six’s timeline but Feige with anticipation unveiled the next Avengers movies titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty releasing May 2, 2025 and the highly anticipated Avengers: Secret Wars releasing November 7th, 2025. Both huge movies releasing six months apart with Kang being the big villain of the Multiverse saga in this new era of the MCU.

These two Avenger films culminate what Marvel started in Phase 4 and will continue to build throughout the next three years.

The Multiverse Saga is taking shape and from what I know its going in an exciting route. though with many blank spaces currently available on the timeline, its looking likely that we may get them filled during D23 in September as there were no mentions of the EternalsShang-Chi, Armor Wars, Thor and Doctor Strange). We’ve certainly been fed so much Marvel content for three years which is definitely exciting.

Which project are you most excited for?
