Nobody | A Slick, Stylish, Fun, Action Film

Published

on

Who’d have thought that Bob Odenkirk had it in him to be a great action star? Nobody proves that Odenkirk can do action really well and with absolute ease despite being almost 60 years old and he can make it great fun whilst doing so.

Nobody follows Hutch Mansell (Odenkirk) a nobody- he’s an overlooked, suburban dad but one night two thieves break into his home and his rage is ignited and he embarks on a brutal path of death and destruction and secrets about his past start to get uncovered. Along the way we see Odenkirk beat up a gang of thugs on a bus to protect a girl, as well as taking on the Russian mob in what’s the best action film of the year.

The whole film is really stylish, with lots of the big set-pieces taking place against well-known and recognisable music which really adds a bit of flare to the film. There’s lots of gory kills, slo-mo and so much that makes the film really entertaining and fun to watch. There’s plenty of action scattered throughout the 92-minute runtime, and whether this was intentional or not, the action seems to escalate as the film goes on so by the time you reach the film’s climax, the action is of such a high quality, and it really gets your heart racing, adding a sense of the increasing scale and stakes as the film progresses.

That being said, all of the action in the film is superb and so well-choreographed. It feels gritty and it’s intense with lots of blood, but the film also manages to maintain this really clear energy and sense of fun and entertainment to the action. Whilst there is strong violence and blood, the action never feels like it’s too heavy or too much. It’s at just the right level that Nobody is so much fun and so entertaining that it’s impossible to watch it and not have an absolute blast of a time.

One thing that immediately sticks out with Nobody however is that it feels slightly derivative and a bit of a copy of John Wick. Seeing the film’s trailer and poster when they were first released a few months ago immediately had people saying that it looks like a John Wick rip-off. And after watching the film, it’s clear that John Wick must’ve been quite key in the creation and production of this film. In fact, the John Wick trilogy and Nobody were both written by the same person. But despite the similarities- and there are lots, e.g Russian gangster villains and a home invasion leading to a killing spree to name a few- the reason why Nobody works and is so good without feeling like a poor man’s John Wick is because of Bob Odenkirk. He’s so great and brings so much character and charisma to Hutch that Nobody is wholly compelling and manages to recreate the success and excitement of the John Wick films.

Whilst the tone and the feel of Nobody does differ quite a bit from the John Wick franchise, with the latter being much more intense and focussed on the fantastic world-building at play, the main problem you get when watching Nobody is that it does just feel that bit too familiar. It’s a fairly simple film and it’s not meant to be too much more than an entertaining popcorn flick but its familiarity is what gets in the way and stops Nobody from being an outstanding film. It’s great fun and thoroughly entertaining, it just can’t escape the familiarity of other, similar action films.

Nobody is a slick, stylish, fun action film that isn’t afraid to go down the route of gritty and tense action scenes and it’s a blast to watch. It’s action-packed and so entertaining making it one of the best films of the year so far.

★★★★☆

Nobody is released in UK cinemas on Wednesday June 9th.
