Marvel’s What If…?- Season 1 Episode 4 Review

Published

on

What If…?  is the latest Marvel Studios project to arrive on our small screens on Disney +.

The animated anthology series, created by Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia writer A.C. Bradley and Marvel vet Bryan Andrews flips the script on the MCU as following the creation of the multiverse in Loki’s first season finale, What If…? reimagines famous events from the films in unexpected ways.

With each episode centred around different characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, What If…? has truly told each of the stories within different genres beginning with Captain Carter set in WWII, then a space heist with T’Challa’s Star-Lord, and last week an Avengers murder mystery with a shocking twist.

Episode four takes my favourite Bleecker Street sorcerer, Dr. Stephen Strange and sees his origin retold and reshaped in this alternate universe. The Watcher is carefully keeping an eye on Strange as although a tiny bit different, Doctor Strange’s origin story from the 2016 movie is still here. The Nexus point aka The What If…? moment is that Christine and strange never parted ways. So this means instead of Strange going to his award ceremony alone on that tragic night, Christine was with him and unfortunately now in that car crash.

This episode does a brilliant job of showing us the circumstances that would end up making Dr. Stephen Strange a much darker sorcerer in this alternate timeline. It truly was an emotional rollercoaster and definitely gives us hints on what we can hopefully expect In The Multiverse of Madness.

This episode is the most human one yet. The lessons episode four tell is that love can truly break more than just your heart , it can shatter your mind. Its a relentless heartbreaking story of love, grief and shows a fine line between devotion and delusion.

“We have watched how one moment, one choice, can ripple across space and time, giving birth to new stories, heroes, whole universes. But what if it’s the wrong choice? What if the best of intentions has very strange consequences?”

What If… Doctor Strange Lost His Heart Instead of His Hands?

Synopsis

A grief-stricken Doctor Strange uses the Eye of Agamotto in a dangerous effort to change the past.

Review

The core of this what If…? episode takes place after the events of Doctor Strange with Stephen using the Eye of Agamotto in a desperate attempt to save the love of his life, Christine. He becomes consumed with finding a spell that can bring her back to life.

A montage then occurs as Strange uses the time stone by changing realities and to save Christine. Unfortunately no matter how many times he goes through the loop, Christine dies no matter what he does, this is truly heartbreaking.

©Marvel

This episode also features the returned MCU actors who lend their voices to their titular character.

Benedict Cumberbatch, Rachel McAdams, Benedict Wong and Tilda Swinton. The latter as the Ancient One who warns Strange about the laws of time travel and establishing that moments like these must happen and cannot be changed. So if Stephen did save Christine he would never find the mystic arts, never defeat Dormamu and ultimately Strange would never become the Sorcerer Supreme.

Strange however refuses to give up and instead finds a way to defeat the laws of the universe.

Without spoiling any more, this episode perfectly represents the type of stories What If…? should continue with. It adds tons of depth and dimension to the character which ultimately is talking plenty of risks. We realise how far the manipulation of time can go, It shows just like Wanda that Stephen is so powerful that he too can alter the reality around him. Both Wanda and Strange have done this in order to safe the life of or preserve a love one.

Episode 4 is definitely my favourite of the series so far.

Marvel’s What If…? – Season 1 Episode 3 Review

Published

on

What If…?  is the latest Marvel Studios project to arrive on our small screens on Disney +.

The first episode introduced a new character to the MCU, Captain Carter. Episode two showed a unique look at T’Challa who mistakingly was put into the world of the Ravager’s and Guardians of the Galaxy, which was certainly a highlight of the series.

Episode three however provides us with an alternate take on 2012’s The Avengers exploring how the process of assembling Earth’s mightiest heroes goes horribly wrong.

The assembling of the Avengers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was movie magic and a cinephiles dream, especially one who’s read the comics. Seeing Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, Hulk, Thor and Hawkeye defend the earth from Loki under Fury’s Surveillance in 2012 was awesome. However What If…? puts a twist on the events prior and ultimately puts each Avenger in danger. Fury and Agent Coulson have to put on their detective mindset and unfortunately make a deal with a mischievous god in order to catch the killer in this race against the clock murder mystery thriller.

” Humanity so eager, so willing to face the impossible, yet blind to the bigger picture. Inside one week, three strange and separate stories unfolded. A genius battle his demons both inside and out, while the world met the monster hiding in the man. And a godly prince fell to Earth. I am the Watcher. And where humans see chaos, I see the crucible that would transform this collection of individuals into a team of heroes. At least, that’s how things played out in one universe .”

What If… The World Lost its Mightiest Heroes?

Synopsis

Nick Fury struggles to launch The Avengers when candidates are targeted by a serial killer.

Review

What If’s…? third episode titled “What If… The World Lost its Mightiest Heroes?” was ambitious, successful, dark and the most suspenseful episode so far with a thrilling mystery that seamlessly connects the dots and blends multiple stories and reimagines them as a whodunnit conspiracy thriller with an edge, this is something we don’t get to see in marvel and it’s a first in animation.

This episode is built for a murder mystery and does stay intriguing until the final reveal. The first two episodes featured both fantastic character driven journeys that helped in building a narrative, however I felt in this episode that it focuses more on telling a larger story which really didn’t let any character stand out. Though it was great to see Coulson back with this ensemble cast of characters.

Returning from the MCU to voice their respected characters this week are Samuel L. Jackson(Nick Fury), Jeremy Renner(Hawkeye), Mark Ruffalo(Bruce Banner/Hulk), Tom Hiddleston(Loki), Clark Gregg(Phil Coulson), Jaimie Alexander(Sif), Frank Grillo(Brock Rumlow) and Michael Dougles as Hank Pym. Episode three also demonstrates that impersonators can work as Lake Bell does a phenomenal Scarlett Johansson and Mick Wingert(Tony Stark). This episode also allows Mark Ruffalo the chance to do a couple of Edward Norton scenes.

Within the space of a week, the stories of Iron Man 2, The Incredible Hulk and Thor unfold each having major consequences for its titular hero. And just as Black Widow seems to have discovered the truth behind these fatal events she’s apprehended by an unseen threat.

The episode also features appearances by Loki, his Asguardian army and Hank Pym all add to this thrilling story which ultimately helps build and further the plot.

Loki however overstays his welcome on Earth and his relationship with Fury certainly plays out differently than it does in the main timeline, resulting in the pair working together. And whilst the Avengers may not be around to stop his antics and schemes, Fury gets a welcomed visit from Captain Marvel who’s ready to take on the fight.

©Marvel

The animation again is visually spectacular it seems like a mixture of rotoscoping and caricatures of the actors. It resembles the pages of a comic book where the characters are stylised with depth and shading.

Coulson’s dialogue was absolutely terrific in this Avengers episode. Clark Gregg absolutely had comedic timing, especially with his comments on Thor “Sir, he’s gorgeous and his password confession “ Hashtag-Steve-Steve-Steve-i-Heart-Steve-0704”. Coulson is a true fanboy and will completely geek out for the Avengers.

©Marvel

Overall What If…? episode three takes the Avengers and puts them in a new thrilling, dark and suspenseful genre. It’s definitely something I’d like to see in live action.
