The Zombie Apocalypse in ‘Day of the Dead: Bloodline’

Published

on

Thanks to Saban Films (Power Rangers, The Girl With All the Gifts) we have our first look at the latest chapter in the Dead series of films, Day of the Dead: Bloodline. Directed by Hèctor Hernández Vicens (The Corpse of Anna Fritz) and stars Johnathon Schaech (Prom Night), Sophie Skelton (Outlander), Marcus Vanco (The Shannara Chronicles) and Jeff Gum (Exeter).

SYNOPSIS: A reimagining of George A. Romero’s cult classic, DAY OF THE DEAD: BLOODLINE is set in a post-apocalyptic, zombie-filled world where a former med school student is tormented by a dark figure from her past. The only thing is, he’s a half-human, half-zombie hell-bent on destroying her world.

The late, great George A. Romero was no stranger to remakes of his work. Thanks to some tricky rights issues his Dead series of films have seen a variety of sequels, remakes and unofficial sequels from around the globe. The results have been mixed to say the least. The zombie classic has spawned everything from classics such as Return of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead and Lucio Fulci’s Zombi 2 to utter dreck like Day of the Dead: Contagium and Return of the Living Dead: Rave to the Grave.

If there is anything to be learned from these it is that things work best when they stray from the original source material. Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead remake is fondly remembered thanks to it’s frenetic style and the use of running zombies. Meanwhile the original Return of the Living Dead has gained cult status because of it’s comedic tone and the use of classic punk music. If Day of the Dead: Bloodline‘s deviations from the original are any indication I can’t help but be encouraged.

This remagining of the George A. Romero classic is set to hit theaters, VOD and Digital HD on January 5, 2018.
