‘Thor Ragnarok’ Director Taika Waititi has been in talks to direct a live action ‘Akira’ movie. ‘Akira’ is a Japanese adult/anime film that made its US debut in 1988. Since then the film has become a cult classic and in relatively recent years has attempted to get a live action version off the ground. Rumor has reported even Leonardo DiCaprio has some interest in moving the project. It would now appear that Taika Waititi is in serious talks to finally bring this movie to life. In a recent interview with IGN Waititi shed some light on his feelings about the film:

“I actually love the books,” Waititi told IGN, teasing that his adaptation won’t be based on the landmark 1988 anime film. “I love the movie, but I would not do a remake of the movie. I would do an adaptation of the books.”

It sounds as though Waititi plans to make his adaptation based on the novelization of ‘Akira’ and not the 1988 film. Director Waititi also went on to shed some light on his idea of casting for the film. In light of recent fan backlash about Scarlett Johansson being cast as Major in the live action version of ‘Ghost in the Shell‘ Waititi had this to say:

“[Casting] Asian teenagers would be the way to do it for me and probably no, not, like no name, I mean sort of unfound, untapped talent,” he said. “Yeah, I’d probably want to take it a bit back more towards the books.”
